Torontonians have some work to do in the bedroom if they want to make their city the sexiest in Canada, according to a survey of sex toy purchases.
Toronto finished a flacid 9th out of 33 Canadian cities. Calgary topped the list as the city with the most toys in the bedroom.
“I’m shocked. This doesn’t make sense and it upsets me. I would have thought Toronto would be on top,” said Ryan Lemesurier, a fetish and fashion consultant at Northbound Leather.
Even though the population of Hogtown dwarfs Regina or Saskatoon, the prairie cities purchased more gadets for their bedside tables in 2018, according to PinkCherry — Canada’s largest online store for adult novelty products.
The top selling items in Toronto are all from the female pleasure category like the Jack Rabbit Vibrator. Torontonians also like a bit of bondage with cuffs of all sorts being big sellers.
“Wrist and ankle restraints sell like crazy,” Lemesurier said, adding that Valentine’s Day marks the time of year that many a Bay St.-type of gent get out and make purchases with a partner in mind.
“Men come in and buy more for women,” Lemesurier said.
Sexy Calgary had the highest amount of novelty sales with female simulators being the most likely purchase.
Western Canada always had a reputation for being open and experimental, said sex columnist Simone Paget.
“I think these (PinkCherry) stats have less to do with people’s actual attitudes and behaviors and more to do with access. In big cities like Montreal and Toronto, you have a bunch of really great sex-positive brick and mortar stores,” Paget said.
“While there are a couple of great sex stores in Vancouver and Calgary, it’s just not on the same scale. Instead, of seeking out the products in brick and mortar stores — that may not exist in their communities — consumers are opting to order sexy items online.”
PinkCherry believes it has found a correlation between two of Canada’s favorite past times: Hockey and sex.
“The better the cities’ NHL teams are doing in hockey, the less they spend on sex toys per person.”
