A Russian social media star has been found dead inside a suitcase in her apartment with her throat slit, police have said.

Ekaterina Karaglanova, who had more than 85,000 followers on Instagram, was found with knife wounds to her body in her flat in Moscow in Friday.

The 24-year-old, who had recently graduated as a doctor, had just begun a new relationship and was planning a holiday to the Netherlands to celebrate her birthday, according to Russian paper Moskovsky Komsomolets (MK).

Her parents became concerned when they were unable to contact her in the days leading up to her trip and asked the landlord for access to her flat.

When they arrived, they found the suitcase in the hallway.

Police said there was no evidence of a struggle and that there was no weapon at the murder scene.

They also added that her ex-boyfriend was seen on CCTV in the days before the discovery, but would not confirm if this was a line of enquiry.

MK reports that her former boyfriend has now fled the country.

Ms Karaglanova, who was runner-up in the Miss Moscow competition, posted under the handle katti_loves_life.

Her feed was mostly shots of herself in exotic locations.

Many of her fans noted her resemblance to the actress Audrey Hepburn.

Ms Karaglanova’s most recent post was from the Greek island of Corfu on 22 July, accompanied by the caption: “That was the end of our short, but very fun trip to Corfu.

“It was very opportune for a few days to escape from the torrential rains and cold to the Ionian Sea.”

Earlier in the month, she described her journey into medicine, and said that she was undertaking an internship in dermatology, venereology and oncology.
